Environment

In the many North American townships in which we operate, we have demonstrated a commitment to the environment through the implementation of practices and technologies which provide environmental benefits extending beyond the operation and management of our state of the art landfills, including:
  • diversion of waste from our landfills through our recycling facilities;
  • organized, timely, safe waste removal from residential and business communities;
  • energy capture of greenhouse gases for productive use; state-of-the-art, park-beautiful landfill designs, with greenhouse, recreational and educational areas;
  • recycling and composting to conserve precious resources.
Sound environmental practices begin with compliance to all laws and regulations. We operate in one of the most heavily regulated industries, and our facilities are subject to rigorous regulatory oversight and inspection. Sound environmental practices begin with compliance to all laws and regulations. From monitoring and sampling to testing soil composition and monitoring air emissions and groundwater quality, we demonstrate the diligence we believe our customers, communities and regulators demand and deserve.

Beyond meeting regulatory expectations, we work constantly to identify best management practices that promote environmental sustainability. In all of our communities, this means engaging with regulators, engineers and industry experts to learn about and implement new waste management technologies. We are committed to being a good neighbour and an exemplary corporate citizen.

A Good Neighbour

Throughout the year we facilitate programs that benefit the communities we serve. These projects include education centers, safety programs, household hazardous waste collections, Christmas tree recycling, Earth Day educational programs, environmental college scholarships and food drives. Each year, we hold an Arbor Day Tree Seedling Give-Away and a Mulch Give-Away Day. We are also an active participant in community programs such as clean-up days and adopt-a-highway.

In addition to our many environmental outreach programs, our people serve on or assist local planning boards and committees and are members of local service organizations and clubs. Our employees play a critical role in helping to support these local organizations which form the backbone of the communities in which we work and live.

Environmental Protection

Our landfill sites are carefully constructed and managed to ensure that our non-hazardous solid waste disposal activities operate under the strictest State/Provincial and Federal environmental guidelines.

The many environmental safety systems in place at our landfills bring peace of mind to our surrounding communities. The land, air and water at our facilities are protected by scientifically engineered lining, capping, leachate removal and treatment, and landfill gas collection and treatment systems; and all of our safety systems are tested and monitored regularly. In addition to these practices, BFI Canada and IESI also employ a number of best management operational techniques to make us better neighbours, like sending out crews to pick up windblown papers along public roads, utilizing falconry for gull management and washing down our on-site roads to prevent the off-site tracking of materials.
